For youngsters experiencing homelessness or unstable housing, these basic items can calm first-day jitters, restore self-assurance, and allow them to concentrate on their studies.

Operation 412NC is urging the Charlotte community to support at least 20 children in preparing for the 2026–2027 academic year through its yearly Back-to-School Initiative. The nonprofit is seeking monetary donations, child sponsorships, school supplies, clothing, personal care products, and volunteer assistance until Friday, Aug. 14.

Donated items will be handed out during the Operation 412NC Back-to-School Event on Saturday, Aug. 15, in Charlotte. Children who take part will receive backpacks, classroom materials, uniforms, clothing help, haircuts, hairstyles, and other resources meant to help them start the school year feeling prepared and uplifted.

“For a child already dealing with uncertainty at home, heading back to school without the essentials can make that first day even more difficult,” explained Pamela Hankins, president of Operation 412NC, which she launched alongside her husband, Shaun Hankins. “We want every child we serve to go through those doors with a smile, feeling confident and knowing their community believes in them.”

Community Support Creates a Stronger Start

Operation 412NC is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit that serves individuals and families living in hotels, shelters, transitional housing, and other temporary arrangements.

This year, the organization is collaborating with Touched With Joy, Swaggerz, and Champion House of Care to bring together volunteers, services, and resources for the families involved.

According to a July 2026 survey by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics, families with children in elementary through high school intend to spend an average of $863.86 on school items this year. Total spending for students in kindergarten through 12th grade is projected to hit a record $43.3 billion.

For parents already struggling to cover housing, food, transportation, and other costs, these extra expenses can make basic school supplies unaffordable.

“When the community gives back, children sense it,” Hankins said. “They feel it in the backpack that’s filled just for them, the haircut that helps them stand a little taller, and the supplies that let them take part without feeling left out. These gifts show children that they matter and that their futures are worth investing in.”

One Child’s Story Shows What Support Can Do

Hankins’ dedication to the initiative stems from what she observed growing up and from the lives of children her family has helped.

“I remember childhood and seeing how tough it was for families to get their kids ready for school,” she recalled. “Some students arrived with everything, while others quietly carried the burden of going without.”

A former classmate of her son remains a powerful example of what happens when a child receives practical help and steady encouragement.

“During a period when her family was staying in a shelter, we were sometimes able to make sure she had lunch and some of the basic support every child deserves,” Hankins shared. “Years later, that same young woman graduated as valedictorian of her high school class and won a prestigious Gates scholarship. Today, she is a proud mother and a pharmacist.”

For Hankins, this young woman’s journey is a reminder that temporary circumstances should never be mistaken for the limits of a child’s potential.

“Her story shows what can happen when a community chooses not to leave a child behind,” Hankins stressed. “When we invest in children, encourage them, and meet practical needs along the way, we give them room to rise and accomplish extraordinary things.”
