The Women Corporate Directors Foundation, the world’s largest membership organization for women who serve on corporate boards, has announced the appointment of Dr. Maria Azua Himmel to its Board of Directors, effective August 17, 2026. The appointment signals a strategic move by WCD to deepen its expertise in technology governance and artificial intelligence at a time when boards across every sector are grappling with digital transformation.

Dr. Himmel brings a rare combination of Fortune 50 technology leadership and corporate board experience to the role. She currently serves as an Independent Director at Pan-American Life Insurance Group and holds a position as Senior Executive Fellow at The Digital Economist, where she focuses on the intersection of emerging technology and enterprise strategy.

Her career trajectory reads like a masterclass in enterprise-scale technology transformation. Most recently, she served as Managing Director at Bank of America, where she held the title of Global Head of Data Platforms and Services, overseeing the infrastructure that underpins one of the world’s largest financial institutions. Prior to that, she occupied senior leadership positions at Fidelity and Barclays, two firms that have invested heavily in technology-driven financial services over the past decade.

Perhaps most notably, Dr. Himmel served as Chief Information Officer and Chief Technology Officer at IBM Global Process Outsourcing, a role that placed her at the center of one of the most consequential shifts in how global enterprises manage their operations. That experience, combined with her academic credentials, which include both an MBA and a doctorate in Computer Science, positions her as one of the most technically credentialed directors in the corporate governance space.

She is also the author of “The Social Factor,” a work that examines how social dynamics and technology intersect within corporate environments, a topic that has only grown in relevance as companies navigate the complexities of remote work, AI integration, and stakeholder engagement.

The appointment comes at a pivotal moment for WCD, which has grown to more than 2,600 members across 56 chapters on five continents over its 25-year history. The organization has positioned itself as a critical pipeline for board-ready women leaders, and the addition of Dr. Himmel suggests an intentional effort to sharpen its focus on technology governance, an area where board-level expertise remains in critically short supply.

“I am honored to join the Women Corporate Directors Global Board,” Dr. Himmel said in a statement. Her track record suggests she will bring not just strategic insight but operational depth to an organization that increasingly serves as a convening force for women navigating the upper echelons of corporate leadership.

Cathy Gonzales, WCD’s Lead Director, framed the appointment in forward-looking terms. “We are confident that Dr. Himmel is especially well-positioned to help move WCD into the future,” Gonzales said, a statement that underscores the foundation’s recognition that technology fluency is no longer optional at the board level.

The broader context is hard to ignore. Corporate boards across industries are under mounting pressure to demonstrate competence in AI strategy, data governance, cybersecurity, and digital transformation. Yet studies consistently show that technology expertise remains one of the most significant gaps in boardroom composition. Organizations like WCD play an increasingly important role in closing that gap by cultivating a pipeline of leaders who combine deep technical knowledge with governance experience.

Dr. Himmel’s appointment also reflects a wider trend of financial services executives transitioning into governance and advisory roles where their experience managing complex, regulated, technology-intensive operations translates directly to the challenges facing modern boards. As companies in every sector become, in effect, technology companies, the demand for directors who understand both the strategic possibilities and the operational realities of digital transformation will only intensify.

For WCD, the move represents a bet that its value proposition to members and to the broader corporate ecosystem depends on staying ahead of the governance challenges that will define the next decade. With Dr. Himmel on its board, the foundation appears to be positioning itself to do exactly that.
