North Edinburgh cafe celebrates seven years of change, resilience and community after evolving from North Fort Cafe into Tatashe Cafe

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered an unforeseen halt, forcing the café to close for a lengthy period. During that tough time, the owner chose to steer the venture in a fresh direction, rebranding it as a Nigerian café and bistro.
That choice eventually laid the groundwork for what is now Tatashe Cafe. The name Tatashe originates from the Yoruba language and translates to paprika, signifying the café’s Nigerian heritage and its link to the tastes and culinary traditions of Nigeria.
Seven years after the original business launched, the café has evolved into a Nigerian eatery in North Edinburgh, serving signature flatbread sandwiches inspired by Lagos flavours, Nigerian cuisine, and the broader food culture of Nigeria, alongside coffee and cakes.
The journey also involved another rebranding, resulting in the Tatashe Cafe name familiar to customers today. The business still operates from 19 North Fort Street in Edinburgh, where it has forged its identity around food, hospitality, and ties to the surrounding community.
“Rebranding the cafe as a Nigerian cafe and bistro was one of the biggest decisions I made during my business journey,” said Tosin Moemeke, owner of Tatashe Cafe. “It was a risk, but it felt like the right one, so I took the leap.”
The café’s seven-year milestone also highlights the backing it has received from customers and the broader North Edinburgh community throughout the shifts and hurdles of the last seven years.
