Local Services Inc. details how EyeOnWater alerts can uncover concealed leaks as drought conditions persist across Washington County.

ST. GEORGE, UT, UNITED STATES, July 18, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — As St. George nears the end of the month it designated for completing upgrades on all 36,000 water meters, an increasing number of homeowners now receive detailed insights into when and how water is used on their properties.

The City of St. George smart-meter project represents a $9.5 million expansion of the Automated Metering Infrastructure system. According to the city, $4 million of the expense is covered by grants, with the balance financed through water rates. The upgraded meters send usage data every 15 minutes to a cloud-based system, enabling residents to monitor consumption and establish alerts for abnormal or continuous water flow via EyeOnWater.

The timing carries weight for Southern Utah. Drought.gov figures updated July 14 indicate that 138,115 Washington County residents—the entire county population—live in drought-affected zones. January through June 2026 ranked as the county’s 24th-driest start to a year in 132 years, with precipitation falling 3.23 inches below normal.

“Smart-meter data can give homeowners an earlier warning, but it cannot show exactly where the water is going,” said Ron Madruga, owner of Local Services Inc. “The next step is determining whether the flow is coming from a running toilet, irrigation line, water heater, appliance connection or concealed plumbing leak.”

Receiving an alert does not always indicate a major pipe burst. Homeowners should first verify that all faucets, showers, and water-using devices are turned off; examine toilets for continuous running; inspect visible supply lines and water heaters; and review irrigation timers. EyeOnWater activity during nighttime hours can also prove valuable, as unexplained flow is more noticeable when a home should be using little or no water.

St. George’s tiered water-rate system gives residents another incentive to investigate unexpected usage. The city reports that a typical existing residential customer with a three-quarter-inch meter has a monthly excess-use limit of 36,000 gallons. Residential connections established after January 1, 2023 face rolling monthly thresholds ranging from 8,000 gallons in winter to 20,000 gallons in summer.

When the source of ongoing water consumption remains hidden, a licensed plumber can isolate sections of the system and determine whether repairs are required. Local Services Inc. offers plumbing service in St. George, Utah, including electronic leak detection, running-toilet repair, pipe repair, water-heater service, and 24/7 emergency plumbing.

The city-owned smart meter measures water entering a property and can notify residents of unusual consumption. For homeowners seeking an extra layer of protection, the Moen Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff is an in-home device installed on the main water line that tracks activity and can automatically shut off the household water supply upon detecting a critical leak.

Until August 31, 2026, Local Services Inc. is providing customers in St. George and surrounding areas with $100 off professional installation of a qualifying Moen Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff. Installation depends on property compatibility, product availability, and applicable service terms.
