When NATO prepares its commanders for the unpredictable chaos of modern warfare, the training scenarios they face are not improvisations—they are meticulously engineered products. That behind-the-scenes work now has a renewed foundation, as Calian Group Ltd. has locked in a five-year commitment worth roughly CAD$47 million to keep building those complex exercise environments for the Alliance.

Calian Group Ltd., a mission-critical solutions provider operating across defence, space, healthcare and other strategic infrastructure sectors, announced today that it won the contract following a competitive procurement process. The award extends the company’s established partnership with the NATO Joint Warfare Centre (JWC) in Stavanger, Norway, and cements its role as a reliable contributor to NATO’s collective training and operational readiness efforts.
Under the terms of the agreement, Calian will handle the design, development and upkeep of intricate training scenarios that drive NATO’s strategic and operational-level exercises. These scenarios are built to simulate realistic, shifting operating environments, pushing commanders and their staffs to make decisions, coordinate across multiple domains, and adapt to the increasingly volatile security landscape the Alliance must navigate.
The JWC itself functions as a cornerstone of NATO’s training enterprise, preparing headquarters units and forces for both current deployments and future missions. Through sophisticated exercises and experimentation, the Centre bolsters Alliance readiness, interoperability, and overall operational effectiveness—goals that depend heavily on the quality of the scenarios Calian delivers.
“The security environment is changing quickly and NATO forces need training that reflects the complexity, uncertainty and pace of modern operations,” said Roch Pelletier, Calian’s Regional Vice President of Defence. “The award reflects NATO’s continued confidence in our people and our expertise. We are proud to continue working alongside the Joint Warfare Centre to deliver the realistic, demanding training environments that help commanders and staff prepare to operate and succeed together.”
Calian already serves as a prime contractor at the JWC, supplying subject matter expertise for operational and strategic-level exercises. Over years of supporting NATO’s scenario development, the company has developed a deep capability for translating evolving threats, operational concepts, and exercise objectives into training environments that feel authentic and pressure-filled.
Scenario development sits at the heart of effective synthetic and collective training. Calian’s teams weave together political, military, economic, civil, and information factors that shift as an exercise unfolds, creating conditions where participants can practice decision-making, coordination, and command in settings that mirror contemporary operational challenges.
This award adds to Calian’s broader defence training and simulation portfolio across Canada, Europe, and allied markets, further entrenching its status as a leading supplier of collective training, simulation, exercise support, and military capability development for NATO and partner nations.
Why it matters: As threats grow more multifaceted and unpredictable, the quality of pre-deployment training can determine mission success. This contract signals that NATO is doubling down on realistic, scenario-driven preparation—and that Calian remains a central piece of that readiness machinery for years to come.
